Pakenham is named after Pakenham in County Westmeath, Ireland, and was one of the townships established in the Cardinia district in the mid-to-late 1800s as the region opened for land selection. From the 1970s Pakenham began to show aspects of a Melbourne commuter suburb while still serving the local farming community, and it is today the largest residential hub in the Shire of Cardinia.
