Berwick is named after Berwick-upon-Tweed in Northumberland, England — the home town of Captain Robert Gardiner, one of the first European settlers in the district, who established a pastoral run called “Berwick” in 1838 alongside Terence O’Connor, generally regarded as the first European settler on the Cardinia Creek lease. The City of Casey itself is named after Lord Richard Gavin Gardiner Casey — the 16th Governor-General of Australia — and Lady Maie Casey, who lived on their property “Edrington” in Berwick. The City of Casey was formed on 15 December 1994. Berwick is the traditional centre of the municipality, with Berwick railway station on the Pakenham line providing CBD rail access, and the “Riding of the Bounds” event celebrating Berwick’s sister city relationship with Berwick-upon-Tweed.
