Hurstbridge is named after the Hurst family, who were among the early settlers of the Diamond Valley from the 1840s. The township became the terminus of the Hurstbridge railway line when the line was extended from Diamond Creek in 1912, making it one of the most distant suburban rail termini in Melbourne’s north-east. The township retains a genuine village character — historic buildings, galleries, cafes and community facilities set among orchards, vineyards and the bushland of the Nillumbik Green Wedge. The Shire of Nillumbik was formed in 1994 from the Shire of Eltham and parts of the Shire of Diamond Valley; the name Nillumbik derives from a Wurundjeri word thought to mean “shallow earth” or “red earth”.
