Diamond Creek takes its name from the Diamond Creek (river) — a tributary of the Yarra — which European settlers found flowing through the valley when they took up grazing runs here from the late 1830s. The township was established during the gold rush of the 1850s and became a major orcharding centre as the Diamond Valley’s fertile flats were planted with fruit trees from the 1870s. The Hurstbridge railway line reached Eltham in 1902 and Diamond Creek in 1909, opening the valley to residential settlement. Today Diamond Creek is the southern gateway to the Nillumbik Green Wedge Shire, with the Diamond Valley Sports and Fitness Centre, Diamond Valley Railway (a much-loved miniature train), and a thriving village centre along Main Hurstbridge Road.
