Mulgrave takes its name from the Shire of Mulgrave, which covered the broader area before amalgamation. The land was home to the Bunurong people, who hunted emus and kangaroos across these plains, and early European settlers in the 1840s established fruit orchards and farms — including Joseph Jells, who purchased land on Jells Road in 1849 and whose family’s property along Dandenong Creek became Jells Park, now a 127-hectare regional parkland. Mulgrave was one of the last major areas in the City of Monash to be developed residentially, with rapid housing growth taking place in the 1970s as Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs expanded beyond the earlier railway corridors.
