Mernda means “young girl” in the local Wurundjeri Aboriginal language, reflecting the suburb’s deep Indigenous heritage in the Plenty Valley. The township was originally called South Yan Yean, but was renamed Mernda in 1913 — when the community consisted of a school, a Methodist church, a store and a railway station. Carome, a heritage bluestone house built in the 1860s near a flour mill on the Plenty River, is now used as a restaurant and is one of the area’s most significant surviving colonial structures. In the early 1900s Mernda was known for its dairy farms supplying milk to Melbourne. The Mernda train station is the northern terminus of the Mernda line, whose extension was opened in 2018.
