Clifton Hill takes its name from Clifton near Bristol, England, coined by early land speculator J.H. Knipe. Unlike the privately subdivided inner suburbs of Collingwood and Richmond, Clifton Hill was laid out by government surveyor Clement Hodgkinson between 1865 and 1869, giving it the unusually wide, ordered streets, parks and reserves — including Darling Gardens and Mayor’s Park — that earned it the nickname “the Toorak of Collingwood” in the 1880s. The Shot Tower built alongside Alexandra Parade in 1882, and the Clifton Hill railway station opened in 1888 as the junction of what are now the Mernda and Hurstbridge lines, are both on the Victorian Heritage Register. The suburb has undergone significant gentrification since the 1970s and is today one of Melbourne’s most sought-after inner addresses.
