Altona was first permanently settled in 1842, when Alfred Langhorne built The Homestead on Altona Bay. The suburb’s name dates to 1861, bestowed by Frederick Taegtow — a German settler who named the area after Altona near Hamburg, his home town. On 20 February 1911, aviator J.J. Hammond made the first cross-country flight between towns in Australia from Altona Bay to Geelong, and three days later made the first powered passenger flight in Australia from the same beach.
