Mentone was founded as a seaside resort town named after the Italian spelling of Menton — a French Riviera town favoured by British Prime Minister Gladstone — and its streets bear Italian names such as Venice, Naples, Florence and Como, laid out in the 1880s. In the summer of 1886–87, Heidelberg School artists Tom Roberts, Frederick McCubbin, Arthur Streeton and Louis Abrahams rented a cottage in Mentone and painted its beach scenes, creating some of the most celebrated works in Australian art history. Mentone Girls’ Grammar School has educated students here since 1899, making it one of Kingston’s oldest schools.
