Launching Place takes its evocative name from the early timber-getting industry of the Upper Yarra — logs felled in the surrounding forests were rolled down to the Yarra River at this point and launched downstream to be floated to Melbourne’s sawmills. This practice of log-driving on the Yarra was a major industry in the mid-19th century. The township sits on the Warburton Highway between Yarra Junction and Woori Yallock, and the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail passes through the community along the former railway corridor. The former Upper Yarra Shire, which served this community, was incorporated into the Shire of Yarra Ranges in 1994.
