Kooyong takes its name from an Aboriginal word meaning “camp or resting place” or “haunt of the waterfowl” — Kooyongkoot being the original name for Gardiners Creek, which flows along the suburb’s northern edge. John Gardiner, the first European to graze cattle in this area from 1837, lends his name to the creek. Kooyong is best known as the home of the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club — the former home of the Australian Open, held here from 1927 until 1987 when it relocated to Melbourne Park — and Kooyong station on the Glen Waverley line.
