Jacana is named after the jacana — a wetland bird — and has a Jacana station on the Craigieburn rail line, which opened during the postwar era of rapid growth in the Broadmeadows area. Between 1953 and 1957, the Victorian Housing Commission built approximately 1,700 homes across Glenroy and Jacana as part of one of Melbourne’s most ambitious social housing programs. The suburb sits on the northern edge of the former Glenroy pastoral run, whose history is traced back to Scottish settler Duncan Cameron.
