Box Hill was named by early settlers after Box Hill in Surrey, England, and the City of Whitehorse itself takes its name from The White Horse Hotel — a popular coaching inn that stood on the corner of Elgar Road and Whitehorse Road until its demolition in 1933, with the historic horse statue preserved at Box Hill Town Hall. The Box Hill railway station opened in 1882, and the suburb became one of Melbourne’s most dynamic middle-eastern centres, now housing Box Hill Central Shopping Centre, Box Hill Hospital, Box Hill Institute of TAFE, and one of Melbourne’s most significant Chinese-Australian communities. Box Hill has a sister city relationship with Matsudo, Japan, established in 1971. The first European settler in the broader Nunawading District that includes Box Hill was Arundel Wrighte, who established a pastoral run here in 1837.
